Stokes joined the crew of the Beagle in 1825 under Philip Parker King and remained on board for the Darwin voyage which was captained by Robert Fitzroy. He then served under John Wickham while the Beagle surveyed Australian waters and eventually took command of the vessel in 1841. Under his command the Beagle continued on until 1843 surveying the waters of Timor and New Zealand.

A two volume second printing of the First Edition of 1846 with the original blue cloth covers as issued by the publisher and complete with a Folio of Maps. (Slight restoration to spine of Volume 2.). One of only three known copies with adjustments to the type and a consequent mis-print on Page 477 of Volume 1.
